Walmart reaches $1.8 million in fundraising for OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital

Pediatric guest suite in the OHSU Gary & Christine Rood Family Pavilion to be named in honor of company’s 30 years of philanthropic success

2017 marks the 30th anniversary of Walmart and Sam’s Club work with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals like OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital to raise funds that help local kids live healthier lives. In that time, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation, along with Walmart and Sam’s Club associates, customers and members have contributed nearly $1 billion. The unique relationship ensures that money raised at local Walmart and Sam’s Club stores goes directly to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in that area.

Portland area Walmart locations have raised $1.8 million for OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. In recognition of this milestone, OHSU Doernbecher will celebrate Walmart’s local fundraising efforts by naming a pediatric family suite in the Gary & Christine Rood Family Pavilion on behalf of the company, its associates and customers.

Scheduled to open in spring 2019, the Rood Family Pavilion is a five-story guest house on Portland’s South Waterfront that will provide temporary housing to patients traveling long distances to OHSU hospitals and clinics for care. There will be 38 pediatric family suites for OHSU Doernbecher patient families. There also will be 38 suites for adult patients and their caregivers.

“Our Walmart family is passionate about improving the health and well being of the communities we serve. There is little work more delicate or critical than the services provided by OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and others like them,” said Travis Bailey, regional general manager for Walmart. “We are humbled to play a part in supporting their mission and honored to receive such a special recognition.”

“OHSU Doernbecher, is extremely grateful for the support provided by Walmart,” said Jim Ervin, executive director, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Walmart’s generosity helped us reach our fundraising goal for the Gary & Christine Rood Family Pavilion. This wonderful partnership provides hope and healing to patients and families.”
