A Note From our Foundation President

We’re truly living through an unprecedented and challenging time as we navigate the uncertainty that the COVID-19 virus is causing across the world.  But, and I firmly believe this, we are in this together. Across the state, communities are pulling together and taking action to protect the most vulnerable among us, weathering significant personal and professional disruption for the greater good.  This gives me hope, and I thank you for what you are doing to keep your family, friends, and neighbors safe.

As a member of the OHSU community, I wanted to share a bit of what’s going on behind the scenes as OHSU prepares to meet the challenges of this pandemic.  As Oregon’s academic health and research center, OHSU is playing a leadership role in the statewide response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The “command base” for OHSU’s COVID-19 response is the OHSU Emergency Operations Center.  It meets at least twice every day and is staffed by experts in all of OHSU’s mission areas, including infectious diseases, infection prevention and control, occupational health, logistics, emergency management, strategic communications and many others. This team of experts is coordinating with health systems statewide to stay on top of an ever-changing situation so that OHSU can provide the right care in the right place at the right time. In anticipation of a possible surge in patients, contingency planning and preparations are well underway for both inpatient and outpatient care sites, including mobile and satellite facilities.

OHSU also maintains an excellent working relationship with public health colleagues and participates in frequent preparedness calls related to COVID-19 and the situation in Oregon.  Click here for more details on OHSU’s preparedness and planning.

The full scope and magnitude of the crisis is currently impossible to predict. The good news is that OHSU has expertise in handling complex medical challenges in a rapidly changing environment.

At OHSU, our physicians, nurses, researchers, faculty and staff are reacting swiftly and strategically with initiatives that will make a lifesaving difference in OHSU’s and Oregon’s public health response. Clinicians are working around the clock to combat COVID-19. OHSU’s diagnostic labs are scaling up to meet increased demand, and researchers are investigating the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of COVID-19.

OHSU has created a wealth of resources for the community and continues to publish news stories as they develop. We at the Foundation will also provide you with updates on OHSU’s efforts in combating this virus and how you can help.

Finally, I want to thank you. You are an integral and valued part of the OHSU community. You have supported the missions of OHSU, and that support gives me — and the rest of the Foundation team — motivation and encouragement to continue our efforts to support the work and people at OHSU.

With gratitude,
Matt McNair
